Cutouts: Multiple Views for Tabletop Groupware

چکیده
Tabletop work surfaces have several natural advantages for smallgroup collaboration, but tables also have physical constraints that can make group work difficult. In particular, tables are sometimes inflexible: artifacts on the table are always oriented improperly for some members of the group, and it is difficult to work in the same location as another person. In this paper, we introduce a new display infrastructure that greatly improves the flexibility of digital tabletop systems, and allows tables to better support the variable organization of work that is evident in real-world tabletop collaboration. Our approach – called cutouts – allows users to interactively create multiple views of the tabletop workspace. Cutouts allow people to work on objects from a different location, and allow people to move and re-orient a group of objects quickly and easily. Cutouts solve some of the usability problems that exist in current tabletop systems, but also provide a new interface paradigm that makes a wide variety of new interactions and manipulations possible.

Comparing Multi-Touch Tabletops and Multi-Mouse Single- Display Groupware Setups
In spite of all the attention paid to multi-touch tabletop displays, little is known about the collaborative tasks they are best suited for in comparison to alternatives such as multi-mouse SingleDisplay Groupware setups. In this paper, we share the results of a study we conducted comparing a multi-mouse Single-Display Groupware (SDG) setup (two mice, 15” vertical display) to a multi-touch tabl...
متن کاملThe Effect of Interaction Techniques on Coordination and Conflict in Tabletop Groupware
The interaction techniques that are used in tabletop groupware systems can affect users’ abilities to track others’ actions and can have a corresponding impact on the way people are able to coordinate their activities. Very little is known about how the different characteristics of the interaction techniques affect coordination in groups, making it difficult for designers to make informed decis...
متن کاملRapidly Prototyping Single Display Groupware through the SDGToolkit
Researchers in Single Display Groupware (SDG) explore how multiple users share a single display such as a computer monitor, a large wall display, or an electronic tabletop display. Yet today’s personal computers are designed with the assumption that one person interacts with the display at a time. Thus researchers and programmers face considerable hurdles if they wish to develop SDG. Our soluti...
متن کاملDesigning Tabletop Groupware
Interactive tables are an emerging class of devices that are subject to different design constraints than other types of single display groupware. Through prototype-building and evaluation, we have identified three key design challenges for tabletop groupware: integrating access to public and private information, managing display elements, and mediating group dynamics. We discuss each of these ...
متن کاملReducing Clutter on Tabletop Groupware Systems with Tangible Drawers
Simultaneously presenting multiple users’ data on a single, shared display, such as an interactive tabletop, often results in visual clutter. One strategy to reduce clutter on horizontal surfaces in the physical world is to store objects in drawers. Items in drawers are hidden from view but are accessible when needed. Inspired by analogies with traditional desks and tables, we have developed ta...
